Noga Dayan Kamil is the coordinator of the Teaching Preparatory Program at Levinsky-Wingate College. She teaches History, Government, and Academic Skills. Previously, she taught History and Government at Tel Aviv University. She has published several short stories and in 2021 released a novel titled “Yearning” (Hebrew: Hitrapkut). In early 2025, her second book will be published by Matar Publishing House.
The novel “Yearning” was written with the intention to critique the education system, from high school through academia, based on the experiences of the author and those close to her within these institutions. For example: in high schools, teachers are not welcomed with open arms but rather receive a cold reception. They are assigned the most challenging classes and receive no support from administration. The Ministry of Education creates unfair competition between schools, and the history curricula are ethnocentric. In academia, there is excessive focus on trivial details.
The author also wanted to spark curiosity in studying history, as the book presents numerous historical events and concepts. Some appear in the protagonist’s consciousness as she compares events in her life to historical events. Others are events she teaches or studies. Still others help her solve mysteries in her life, demonstrating that studying history can have practical value and is not just an “irrelevant subject.”
The author had another aspiration – many people don’t read literature because it seems purposeless and uninstructive to them. She wanted to create a novel from which one could learn history. While there are many historical novels, they typically feature either true or fictional plots set against a specific historical backdrop. In this novel, the historical events are diverse and varied, presented in different contexts throughout the plot.
