Closure

Abstract:

What happens when the investigator who has spent his life solving other people’s mysteries discovers that the greatest mystery of all belongs to him?

For decades, private investigator Sam Zybert has been hired to find the missing pieces in other people’s lives: a lost love, an unknown parent, an adopted child’s biological family, a relationship that ended without explanation, a person who simply disappeared.

Behind every search lies something deeper than a missing person. There is a question that refuses to go away. A truth someone needs to know. A chapter that cannot be closed.

Drawing on extraordinary real cases from his career, Sam takes readers inside investigations that cross countries, decades, identities, and family secrets. Some reunions come just in time. Others come painfully too late. And sometimes finding the truth creates an entirely new dilemma: Is every truth meant to be revealed?

But as Sam helps others confront the unfinished stories of their past, one final investigation turns unexpectedly toward his own family—and forces him to confront a secret that has waited decades to be uncovered.

Closure is a true-life investigative narrative about the mysteries we inherit, the people we never stop searching for, and our deep human need to know how the story ends.

Synopsis:

Private investigator Sam Zybert has built his career finding people others believe cannot be found. Yet the cases that stay with him are rarely about locating a person alone. They are about the unanswered questions people carry for years—and sometimes for a lifetime.

In Closure, Sam revisits a selection of remarkable true investigations from his career. A woman searches for a young man she knew decades earlier, uncertain whether their brief connection meant as much to him as it did to her. An adopted man sets out to discover the identity of his biological parents. A father searches desperately for his missing daughter. A woman devastated by the sudden disappearance of a man she met online needs to know whether she was deceived—or whether something terrible happened to him. A family’s search for biological roots leads Sam toward the disturbing world of illegal adoptions and suspected baby trafficking in Brazil.

The investigations take Sam from Israel to Europe, the United States, Brazil, and beyond. Using persistence, instinct, old records, human connections, and sometimes the smallest overlooked detail, he reconstructs lives that have been separated by distance, secrecy, deception, and time.

But finding someone does not necessarily end an investigation. Again and again, Sam faces a harder question: What should happen once the truth is found? A discovery can reunite a family, expose a lie, heal an old wound—or open one that has been buried for decades.

Another story runs beneath these cases.

Sam lost his father when he was fifteen. What he doesn’t know is that his own family holds an unfinished story, one that began long before he became an investigator. Eventually, through an extraordinary coincidence, a search initiated thousands of miles away reaches Sam himself.

For the first time, the investigator becomes part of the investigation.

And a mystery Sam unknowingly encountered as a five-year-old boy finally finds its answer.

Blending memoir, true investigation, family mystery, and narrative nonfiction, Closure is ultimately not a book about finding missing people. It is about why we search in the first place—and whether knowing the truth can finally allow us to move forward.
